Harpenden Common Golf Club encourages and welcomes new members of all standards.

  • Juniors

Our Junior section numbers about 45 members up to the age of 18 and has a reputation for producing some outstanding performers in Hertfordshire.

Many of our young golfers have been with the Club from 8/12 years old and many continue their membership into adulthood. Their achievements reflect the excellent lessons and coaching of our dedicated professional as well as the commitment of both adult and junior committee members. All junior committee members are DBS checked as a matter of course and we have a Child Protection Officer to safeguard the interests of the juniors.

As a member of the Herts Golf Union, our youngsters take part in County matches, monthly club competitions and annual County competitions. We also compete in the South West Herts league and the Ver Junior league. We hold a very well-supported Open Day for boys and girls to compete in each year. We are totally committed within the Club and County to boys and girls squad training and the development of our younger golfers.

The Club’s Honours boards reflect our excellent performance in major junior events nationally and internationally as well as other representative competitions. Tom Brown and Marcus Fox were very successful juniors at the Club before taking up golf scholarships in America. They won many prestigious trophies and competitions whilst juniors at the Common. Sam Claridge, another junior to come through our ranks, has won numerous County and Club honours and was part of the England squad. Sam currently holds the course record at both Harpenden Common and Berkhamsted.

As a Club, we are very proud of our juniors and young adults who have all taken advantage of our extremely competitive junior membership fees as well as the County subsidised tuition fees.

  • Seniors

The Seniors Section is the largest and a very active sub-section in the Club, with membership automatically granted to any male club member over the age of 55.

Senior Section members are eligible to play in Inter-Club matches, Seniors Competitions and Seniors medals and roll-ups. These events are enjoyable and popular and we encourage new and current members to give them a try if you haven’t done so already. We currently have matches against 12 other local clubs, the format being 4 Ball Better Ball, followed by a convivial lunch. This is a great chance to play some of the best local clubs, such as South Herts, Sandy Lodge, Old Fold Manor, John o’ Gaunt, Knebworth, Letchworth etc.

The Senior Section Competitions, although still taken fairly seriously, are fun. They include Texas Scramble’s, Team Stablefords, 3 Clubs and mixed events with the Ladies Section. There are also the Seniors Singles and Pairs Competitions which are always popular. The main highlights of the year are the Seniors Championship (usually in June), the Seniors Open Invitation (usually in September) and the Christmas competition followed by Christmas lunch.

The Seniors Qualifiers are held on Wednesdays and run concurrently with the Men’s, Ladies’ and Juniors’ Qualifiers, so that you can play with other Seniors, Ladies, Men or Juniors, whichever suits you best. On Mondays and Wednesdays there are Seniors roll-ups at 8.00 and 10.00 am, and on Fridays at 8.00 and 9.30 am, so there is always an opportunity to play with a wide selection of players. But be there 15 minutes before the listed start times to get your ball in the hat!

Want to know more? Please telephone Dawn or Beth in the office on 01582 711320 where they will be delighted to put you in touch with one of our Seniors Committee.

Tuesday is our main competition day, but there is also a group of Business Ladies who play on Saturday mornings.

During the week a number of social groups of varying playing standards meet to play at various times, so there is always an opportunity to get a game. We have a full calendar of competitions throughput the year, including regular medals and Stablefords, as well as 4 ball better ball and other team events. Also in the calendar are a number of inter-club friendly matches and our Ladies compete in the Pearson Trophy and County Scratch League. • Tigers League

Harpenden Common Golf Club has established itself as a participant in the Hertfordshire Tigers League, and this year will yet again see us enter a team in the very competitive, yet friendly league. The Tigers league consists of two parallel divisions; one called the Siberian and the other, which Harpenden Common plays in, called the Bengals. The objective of the league is to provide an opportunity to play a variety of great courses in the county, enjoy the company of like-minded golfers in a less formal, more social, yet very competitive environment. Matches are played weekdays during the late afternoon/early evening, followed by an informal meal free of the formalities typical of inter club matches.

The League is made up of member clubs in Hertfordshire who are looking for competitive golf for weekday golfers with a handicap of 3 or higher. Teams consist of 5 pairs, each pair playing an 18-hole better-ball, match-play match, with strokes (90% of difference) calculated off the lowest handicap in each match. Anyone with a handicap greater than 10 can play in the matches but will need to play off 10 for the match. So if this sounds like something you are interested in, then please do put some of the dates in your calendar and make your interest known to the team captain – Gary McCarthy.

Harpenden Common Golf Club is committed to giving everyone who makes themselves available for matches the opportunity to represent the club. In-form golfers will be given preference, should the available players for any match exceed the required 10 players. Availability notices will be published and maintained on the boards in good time before the start of the season with selected teams announced a minimum of 6 days before each match. Teams in each division play each other in a home and an away fixture. The winner and runner-up of the Bengal division will go on to play a semi-final against the runner-up and winner of the Siberian division. The respective winners will go through to meet each other in a head-to-head final on Friday 28th September 2018 at South Herts Golf Club. The remaining teams in the league participate in the finals day at South Herts Golf Club by competing in a team event, each team comprising of 2 pairs, playing in a combined better-ball competition. In the event the Harpenden Tigers team do not qualify for the final, preference will be given to team members who secured the most points for the team during the league season to represent the club and the Harpenden Tigers team at the finals day.
